The response for the Fire in Art Show is outstanding. I hope you will decide to participate, so please read the information I've provided below. If I've left anything out, let me know. Like flames in a fire, we'll gather with our art and light up the Del Ray Artisans' Center on August 5, 2000. Del Ray Artisans' Center 2704 Mt. Vernon Avenue (directions below) Alexandria, VA 22301 703-838-4827 (Don't call here for information on the show. Read on!) Call for Entries for Fire in Art August 5 to September 2, 2000 Important dates (mark your calendar): Art drop-off Saturday, July 29, 12-5 PM Hanging Show Sunday, July 30, 10 AM to 2 PM Opening , Saturday, August 5, 7-10 PM Artists arrive 15 min. early. Close and art pick-up Saturday, September 2, 4-8 PM and Sunday, Sept. 3, 12-1 PM Theme: The metaphor of Fire is profound, whether applied to the Fire of enthusiasm, the Fire of devotion, the Fire of intelligence, the Fire of creativity, the Fire that lights the way, the Fire that warms, the Fire that cleanses, or to the Fire that makes one see beyond. Through such analogies one begins to get to the core of the hidden source of creativity in human beings. Anybody who has sat by a campfire and watched it for a long time has seen something extraordinary. Behind the leaping flames there is an invisible color--looking closely we see a golden flame, or reds, oranges and blues. Humans have harnessed the power of Fire for use in industry where it may be seen as bright white and in some cases green. This show is for artists who have used Fire in their artwork or have been inspired by Fire as a metaphor or as a tool to create. In the hottest month of the year, we hope to celebrate the Fire of artist creativity in our Fire in Art Show. Rules: Two pieces from each artist may be accepted, three if they are very small works (i.e,. jewelry, pottery, poetry)--one if it is a very large piece (over 5' in any direction). All medium and method are accepted, including: two-dimensional, functional art, glass art, performing art, poetry, etc. Poetry should also be creatively displayed so when you're not performing, people may read your work in a book, card, or whatever. (Performing artists will get a schedule of times to perform during the opening event. Please submit an email describing what you plan to perform. We will provide a microphone, beyond that, you're on your own.) Artists must provide their own insurance as needed. Permission to photograph any work for publicity purposes is considered granted unless otherwise stated in writing. Any artwork deemed inappropriate for the theme of the show, or obscene, will be rejected at drop-off. Installation of larger pieces of work is contingent on space available, so come early during our drop-off time if this pertains to you. Secure onto your artwork the following information (or incur the wrath of the Fire Gods!, read curators): 1. Full Name 2. Full Address 3. Phone 4. Email 5. Description of work and statement on why it belongs in the show (be creative - the length of description is up to you as long as it relates to the fire theme). 6. Date and time and alternate date and time when you can sit the gallery. All artists must agree to sit for two hours on either a Saturday or Sunday during the run of the show. If you can sit for longer, please do. 7. Price of artwork, sorry, no NFS. 8. A figure that shows 10% of the cost of the item. This is what we request from you, should the item sell. This donation is tax deductible and helps the Del Ray Artisans' stay alive. If a buyer wants to purchase your art, we will send them to you directly. 9. Put here your decision to pay our $15 ($10 for members) entry fee per piece, OR to simply provide a creative, sizable appetizer or dessert (please describe) for the opening. Hmmm?tough choice, eh? 10. Come dressed for the opening event. This is your time in the limelight (or is that firelight?) so come looking HOT! Artistically elegant is good enough for us. Get fiery! Shawn and Travis, I hope you will choose to end the show with your very cool fire eating/breathing performance. Cheers!
